The concept of rumors and myths are so amazing. How does false information spread so fast that practically everyone believes it? I love the show Myth Busters. I was for sure that a penny would kill someone if thrown off the Empire State Building, but yet again in life, I was WRONG. Heart breaking enough, today I found out that the Virginia Tech Drillfield is in fact NOT sinking. I feel like my four years at Virginia Tech have been nothing but a lie!!! OKay, maybe not that dramatic of an event, but still. Professors, students, locals, and young children all around the world (again exaggerating) have been told and believe that it sinks 1/4 of inch or so a year. It can't possibly be an urban legend.
I still didn't want to believe it though. I told some friends, and they refuse to believe it either...so I did some googling and researched some old pictures and actually found some interesting history.
In 1894 young cadets stepped ground on the drill field and used it daily to practice skills. Many of whom would lead in War World I and who's names are now etched in our chapel in rememberence of their service and life. All sporting events were played on that field, and spectators watched from up on the sloped hillside. 1898 was the start of the cadet snowball fights on the field, but were temporary ordered to stop in 1910 because of the widespread of pneumonia on campus. To this day we battle cadets vs civilian students on the first snow of the year. Its also a place were students hold protests, for example Vietnam in the 60's. Most recently, we go there to remember those classmates that we lost last year, and remember soldiers lost while serving our country.
You should visit this article and learn more fun facts. It is special to know the next time I walk across that field I will know that some of our greatest heroes stood on the same ground.
So fact or fiction: is the drillfield sinking? FICTION!
