Why Yes, I Am Selfish

Day after day, I think about me...what I want, why my life isn't quite good enough for me, how I want people to treat me, how I want other people to revolve around my wants, needs, and desires. I was thinking about this last night, and how unbelievably selfish I can act. I started thinking back on the time that I went to Ecuador. The humility and joy in those impoverished people's lives was such a blessing to my life. I really think that I need to go on a trip like this at least once or twice a year to give myself a reality check. Its not about me! I can't say that this epiphany will carry on into tomorrow, because I can almost guarantee you that I will act completely and utterly selfishly upon at least one thing if not several.

At this very moment I am looking around my room, which I have complained to be too small. I have a computer, wireless router, webcam, perfume, makeup, a heater, two cameras, a new fancy dress, loads of clothes, headbands, toe nail file, pens, cards from loved ones, college diploma, even unopened Christmas presents, and the list goes on and on.

The point is, even when it feels like I have little, and when I want more more more, I am so utterly blessed beyond measures. These beautiful men, women, and children in Ecuador wore the same clothes everyday, had no running water or electricity, were without a proper education, but yet one thing stands out to me about them to this very day--Their smile!

I have a lot of work to do in my own life, but also a lot of work to do in trying to make a positive imprint on others day in and day out. Just a smile and a sense of appreciation of life can make the difference.

What are you grateful for today?
