Observations: Standing in the Middle

My imperfect observations from today’s particular appreciation day:

1)      We are spoiled nation who’s current wide spread debate dwindles down to the decision of eating or not eating high caloric chicken sandwiches, meanwhile other countries suffer in their starvation and poverty.
2)       It is amazing how quickly people can join forces through the power of social media. What could we accomplish together if both parties of this disagreement worked together for a cause with more meaning and priority?
3)      It breaks my heart that God is hated by non-Christians based on the judgmental  hearts of His “followers”
4)      Perhaps we should take time today to examine our own life and our own sin, before casting stones at others
5)      Seems like both sides are fighting for essentially the same cause, freedom.
6)      Where is the love?

While initially I saw no problem with the essential concept of this appreciation day, after reading hundreds of hateful comments from both sides I would consider today an overall fail. The issue of freedom of speech vs. gay rights escalated beyond individual rights and into judgment and hate. It only added more barriers between a loving God and those in need of redemption and grace. We have the power to change the world, but we are too stuck on imperfect politics to move forward past our own selfish ways. So all though you have all the right to stand in line to eat one delicious fried chicken sandwich for the sake of freedom of speech, consider using your voice (and actions) to show someone love today.
